Non-financial motivation Lesson 2.4 – Year 12 Business http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=e3kyNGVK-hI

In a survey of 1300 Americans, these were the top reasons for leaving a job in 2009… 1. Sought new challenges or opportunities 2. Ineffective leadership 3. Poor relationship with manager 4. To improve work/life balance 5. Contributions to the company were not valued 6. Better compensation and benefits (18%)

Non-financial motivation  So far we have learnt that: 1. Pay alone does not always motivate staff. 2. Different industries and types of staff may be motivated in different ways. 3. The higher the reward, does not necessarily mean better performance.

Job Rotation  This involves workers completing different jobs during the day, week, or month.  This is often used for workers on a production line i.e. attaching the wheels and the engine to car.  Maybe reduced efficiency as skills are not perfected?  Has become less popular in recent years due to the uncertainty it brings to employees  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddU8rV7 _Qis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddU8rV7 _Qis

Job enlargement  Job enlargement means giving the worker some variety in the tasks they do  For example, Mr Hamilton giving me year 12, year 11 and year 10 classes give me more variety but the same level of responsibility.  More of the same?  Perhaps more efficient to use machinery?

Job enrichment  This involved giving the worker more responsibility.  If Mr Blaikie asked me to lead the teaching of business, this would be job enrichment as I would have greater responsibility.  Aim is to empower employees – links to theorists?  Will employees expect more pay?  http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/mo tivating-staff/8584.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/mo tivating-staff/8584.html

Team working  Workers might be put in teams depending on their role or ability.  People working in teams will not want to let their team members down  Sometimes groups of workers may receive a bonus for the work they complete as a team.  Some companies may hold social events to build teams.  Virgin Baggage Handlers

Motivation Carousel  Each group will represent a team working for a different motivational theorist. 1. Discuss how your theorist would motivate the employees. Would it work? 2. How would you use pay and non-pay motivation to the motivate staff.
