Objective 3.04: Apply the principles of design.

6 Principles of Design: 1.Proportion 2.Scale 3.Balance 4.Rhythm 5.Emphasis 6.Harmony

1. Proportion – the size relationships within an object or design.

General Rules of Proportions: Rectangles are generally more pleasing than squares. Unequal divisions of space are more appealing than equal divisions. Proportions are expressed as ratios.

The Golden Rectangle/Section Has sides in a ratio of 2:3 The short sides are 2/3 the length of the long sides Most people study the shapes and sizes of objects and can tell by look if something “fits”.

An easy way to approximate a golden section/rectangle is by using this pattern of numbers: 1,2,3,5,8,13,21 A rectangle with dimensions based on two consecutive numbers in this sequence (ex. 3:5) will be close to the shape of a golden section/rectangle.

2. Scale

Scale - how the size of an object relates to people and to other objects

Dining room table 36” wide X 78” long. Seats 6-8.

Biltmore Banquet Hall seats 66.

It is important to use the human figure in evaluating a room’s scale.
