HIP CMS Programme CMS SOFTWARE AND PHYSICS PROJECT CMS TRACKER PROJECT

1. The Tracker Project CMS Construction: Support structure of the Tracker Outer Barrel (TOB) Quality tests of the TOB Silicon detector modules RPC muon trigger link R&D: Development of radiation hard silicon detectors

Silicon Strip Tracker 5.4 m Outer Barrel -- TOB Inner Barrel &Disks – TIB & TID - End Caps –TEC 1&2- 2,4 m Huge number of silicon detectors (rods, petals, shells) Rad-hard modules and electronics Alignment Cooling and –10 o C “low” mass

Tracker Outer Barrel HIP ”Big Wheel” Prototype 2001 Being ordered now

TOB Support Structure The detector modules are assembled on special supports called rods

Tracker Outer Barrel (TOB): Support Structure The support rods are being assembled at HIP Kumpula Laboratory. Rod components are purchased from Finnish Industry. Precision measurements of the rods are done in collaboration with the Laboratory of Machine Design, Helsinki University of Technology (precision 5  m ).

TOB Support Structure The results of the precision measurements are stored in the CMS data base for alignment. The rods are sent via CERN to the module building labs, where the modules are installed on the rods All 5500 modules are to be installed in the wheel by April 2005.

TOB Silicon Module Tests Production of the TOB Silicon detector modules has been launched at CERN, Fermilab and Santa Barbara. About 100 ready from a total of 5510. Plans for module production at HIP had to be abandonned in 2001 due to lack of infrastructure and funds in Finland.
