3 Kyuushuu Kyushu island inJapan is the third largest, southernmost, and most densely populated of the major islands of Japan. It is separated from Shikoku by the Bungo Strait and from Honshu by the Shimonoseki Strait; a railroad tunnel under the strait and a bridge link Kyushu with Honshu. Mainly of volcanic origin, the island has a mountainous interior rising to 5,886 ft (1,794 m) in Kuju-san; Aso-san, Japan's largest active volcano, is on Kyushu, and there are many hot springs.

4 Kyuushuu The Chikugo (88 mi/142 km long), the island's longest river, waters an extensive rice-growing area in the northwest. Kyushu has a subtropical climate and receives much precipitation. Rice, tea, tobacco, sweet potatoes, fruits, wheat, and soybeans are major crops. Coal, zinc, and copper are mined in Kyushu, and raw silk is extensively produced. The island is noted for its porcelain (Satsuma and Hizen ware).

5 Kyuushuu The famous Imari ware was manufactured at the ancient town of Arita. Heavy industry is concentrated in N Kyushu, near Japan's oldest coal field; Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, and Omuta are major industrial centers. Nagasaki, the chief port of Kyushu, was the first Japanese port to receive Western trade. There are four national parks on the island, and one of Japan's two space centers is located

6 Kagoshima GEOGRAPHY Kagoshima City is located on the southern tip of Kyushu, the most south-western island of Japan's four main islands. The city lies at a latitude of 32 degrees north and a longitude of 130 degrees east. Kagoshima City lies in the heart of Kagoshima Prefecture, which covers a total area of 547 square kilometres. Most of the land within the city limits is between 100 - 300 metres above sea level and consists primarily of ash, volcanic sand and light volcanic debris.

7 Kagoshima Mount Sakurajima, an active volcano, lies four kilometres away across Kinko Bay. Mount Sakurajima has had over thirty major eruptions in recorded history. The most recent major eruption occurred in 1914, which joined the volcanic island permanently to the Osumi peninsula. It has now become the towering symbol of Kagoshima.

8 Kagoshima The perimeter of the volcanic island measures 52km and covers a total area of eighty square kilometres. The volcano consists of three peaks: the north peak, measuring 1117 metres, the central peak, 1060 metres and the south peak being 1040 metres high. The south peak is still active and occasionally showers the city with ash.
