8 What is Public Relations? The earliest definitions emphasized press agentry and publicity, while more modern definitions incorporate the concepts of “engagement” and “relationship building.” “Public relations helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other.” –PRSA widely accepted definition

9 Facts about Public Relations A strong, growing career field- employment growth 18%+ through 2016 as projected by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2009) More than 250,000 PR jobs in the U.S. – and thousands more not specifically identified with the term “public relations” Examples: media buyer, media planner, event planner, blogger, social media specialist, integrated marketing communication, promotional products rep, etc. Grads get jobs! PR students have the highest level of post-Bachelor’s degree employment of all graduates from the communication disciplines (University of Georgia, 2007)
