12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 5 Mission Results The main experiment of Project Windryder was classified as minimal mission success. However, secondary experiments performed relatively well as designed and fully met our expectations for mission success. 6 12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 6 Expected Voltage Results After testing and calculations, our group expected to generate a maximum voltage of around 4.5 volts. Also, we expected to see a definite drop in voltage produced as Windryder ascended. After testing and calculations, our group expected to generate a maximum voltage of around 4.5 volts. 7 12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 7 Voltage Experiment Results The onboard drag driven generator produced a small amount of voltage due to a slow ascent. At an altitude of around 7000m, the voltage dropped due to the atmosphere air containing less molecules than ground level air. Simply put, there was no drag to drive the generator.

12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 8 Voltage Analysis Project Windryder succeeded, but our original tests over-estimated the voltage output. During the testing phase, we estimated a 4.5v output at 2000 RPM’s. During flight, Windryder obtained a max.25v, meaning 170 RPM’s. 9 12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 9 Voltage Vs. Altitude 7000m At 7000m, the atmospheric pressure is approximately.3atm, a third of that at launch. This altitude places the Balloonsat near the Tropopause.

12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 10 Expected Temperature Results Testing showed that the temperature inside of Windryder would hover around freezing point, and dip below near the heart of the mission. External temperature was expected to be about -80.

12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 11 Temperature Results External Temperature (Green) dropped to below -70 degrees and rose back up to about -10 as the balloonsat enters the Ozone layer. Internal Temperature stayed near 0 degrees with + or – 10 degree fluctuations.

12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 12 Temperature Analysis Tests showed the expected internal temperature and the actual internal temperature were very close and the testing was accurate. Tests showed the expected internal temperature and the actual internal temperature were very close and the testing was accurate. External temperature varied due to the Ozone Layer; instead of a constant -80, the external temperature rose during the middle of the mission. This was expected but not tested. 13 12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 13 Secondary Experiment Results Windryder’s secondary experiments returned exactly what we had designed them to do. The digital camera flown took pictures of ascent and descent, the ELPH only ascent due to film. Both HOBO’s recorded data for longer than needed. When Windryder was picked up at the recovery site, the box was still warm from the heater. Windryder’s secondary experiments returned exactly what we had designed them to do. 19 12/05/06 Justice League Satellite 19 Experimental Conclusions A drag driven generator, while noble in design and potential benefit to spacecraft EPS, is just impractical. A drag driven generator, while noble in design and potential benefit to spacecraft EPS, is just impractical. The amount of weight it would take to integrate enough drag driven generators to create an acceptable output would exceed reasonable weight requirements and still would not produce enough voltage to power a spacecraft for a full mission. The amount of weight it would take to integrate enough drag driven generators to create an acceptable output would exceed reasonable weight requirements and still would not produce enough voltage to power a spacecraft for a full mission. The amount of atmosphere that actually can create drag on the fan is miniscule compared to the orbiting altitude of any spacecraft. At a speed that could create enough voltage, this atmosphere would dissipate almost instantaneously.
