Chapter Extension 8 Understanding and Setting up a SOHO Network © 2008 Pearson Prentice Hall, Experiencing MIS, David Kroenke
2
CE8-2 Study Questions What are the components of a SOHO LAN? Why do I access programs in the device access router? How does a SOHO network use DHCP? What security options do I have? How do I setup a SOHO network?

Router has two IP addresses – Private address for local traffic Assigned by manufacturer Address used for internal routing – Public address for Internet traffic Provided by ISP Address valid on public Internet

Device access router provides DHCP server Computer contacts device to sign on to network – Obtains internal (private) IP address DHCP server keeps list with assigned address and MAC address Base station data also maintained – LAN MAC address is MAC address of Ethernet switch – MAC address is from router

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) – Provides security over wireless networks – Each computer accessing LAN must enter symmetric key to encrypt data transmissions – Serious flaws Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) – Improved version – Developed by IEEE 802.11 committee WPA2 – Newer version

Follow instructions for device access router – Must be done in proper order – Work upstream from modem to computer – Cabling must be set up before turning on devices – Socket is designated for line from modem Use MAC address filtering to protect network
