1 Large valleys north of landing site Long/lat: from 341.07E, 24.26N to 340.75E, 24.58N Rational: Sediments deposited in these valleys may be of utmost interest in the concentration and preservation of possible organic matter. Morphology & mineralogy: Some valleys and inverted valleys have cut through the plateau northwards. On the southern, higher part are true valleys, whereas the northern, lower, more eroded part shows inverted valleys. The valleys are filled by dark material (likely basaltic sand) while the base of the inverted channels is Al- phyllosilicate bearing. MSL tasks: At large scale, seek possible fluvial sediments exposed in the valleys. At small scale, study the grain structure, the mineralogy and chemistry of the rocks on valley floors.
