GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 1 GLAST Large Area Telescope: Lowell A. Klaisner Stanford Linear Accelerator Center Project Manager Klaisner@slac.stanford.edu 650-926-2726 Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope LAT Schedule

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 2 LAT Schedule “Tight and success oriented” –Too little success Tighter now than a month ago We are still at the starting gate Adding schedule won’t solve problem by itself –Slipping 4 weeks in a month does not converge –Need to improve our execution We can not “sell” a schedule until we have demonstrated some success fabricating flight hardware This is a project wide issue and we need to work together to resolve the issue – no whining – no blame Need to develop work arounds and ways to execute in parallel The other option is descoping the instrument –Removing towers Very painful to delay delivery of the instrument to observatory integration

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 3 Major Schedule Issues Through CD-4 Tracker –MCM startup and production rate –Attachment to the Grid and associated fixtures –2 per month limit on final assembly and check out at Pisa Work is expanding – Alignment Calorimeter –AFEE boards DAQ –Parts procurement –EGSE procedures –Startup of manufacturing Design closure and drawings –Late flight software Mechanical –Tracker to Grid interface design and implementation

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 4 Issues Continued Integration and Test –Timely completion and qualification of the GSE General –EMI/EMC issues developing late –Incomplete documentation

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 5 Tracker MCM Production

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 6 One Plan for Schedule Recovery Complete 2 tower testing in parallel with remaining integration –Components of Towers A&B to I&T without thermal vacuum testing –They will be installed in the 1X4 grid for single tower testing and two tower Comprehensive Performance Test on the original schedule –Tower 1 components will go through thermal vacuum test at the subsystem and be delivered to I&T on approximately the original schedule. Integration will proceed as planned –The 1X4 assembly will be put through thermal vacuum test in California making components of A&B towers ready for integration –Risk is that a systemic problem will show up in the T/V test of tower 1 (the third tower) Mitigated by EM and Tray level testing

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 7 Other possibilities System test –What can be begun before all equipment integrated? –Can some tests be delayed until NRL? Can we reduce and/or consolidate component testing? –With minimal increase in risk Can work be redistributed to where resources are available? –Some of Tracker tower integration at Alenia? –Some alignment moved to SLAC? Etc? –Discuss at this meeting –Where are the bottlenecks and what can we do about them?

GLAST LAT ProjectSubsystem Managers Meeting May 12, 2004 8 Working Schedule
