D1: Scheduling

Scheduling is normally the final part of a D1 question on critical path analysis. It involves finding out how many workers are needed to complete a project. A cascade (Gantt) chart is a great starting point for a scheduling question, and you may well already have drawn one by the time the scheduling question comes around.

D1: Scheduling Here is a cascade (Gantt) chart: CEHJL A B D F G I K Normally one worker is needed for an activity. So one worker can do the critical path by working non-stop. What about the other activities? A D I K These could be done by one worker working non-stop.

D1: Scheduling Here is a cascade (Gantt) chart: CEHJL A B D F G I K Two workers needed so far – one for the critical path, and one for A, D, I and K. Let’s look again. A D I K B and F could be done by one worker working non-stop. B F That leaves G... G...so 4 workers needed.

D1: Scheduling Notes Always start with one worker for the critical path. Ignore the float on the remaining activities. Never schedule more workers than are strictly necessary. Move them from activity to activity with no break in between... that is the only way to guarantee that you calculate the minimum number of workers needed. If you have not drawn a cascade (Gantt) chart for the question, use the early event times to help you to schedule instead.
