1 S YNTHESIS ABOUT F ACIAL E XPRESSIONS Directions: Write a short essay response using the two articles we read this week to discuss facial expressions. Be sure to include information about the universality of facial expressions, the development of facial expressions, and determining real vs. fake expressions. Make sure you pull information from BOTH articles.

2 C AUSE /E FFECT P RACTICE Students read 2 passages and answer the comprehension questions. With each question the students need to highlight information in the passage that could support their answers and need to highlight keywords in the questions.

3 “S ILENT L ANGUAGE ” Directions: 1. Independently read “Silent Language” on page 363. As you are reading, pay attention to problems and solutions that are presented in the text. 2. When you finish reading, identify 3 examples of problem and solution and put them into a graphic organizer like the example here: 3. Answer questions #1-2 on page 368 in complete sentences. 4. Read the poem “Face It” on page 361. PROBLEMSOLUTION

4 C OMPUTER L AB 1. Go to www.empower3000.comwww.empower3000.com 2. Enter your username/password to log in. 3. Select “Haarer” in the dropdown box. 4. Click “Begin Lesson” on the home page to start today’s article (“Ancient Middle East: A Sweet Find”). 5. Respond to the poll with an explanation. 6. Read the article and identify at least 5 key points. 7. Fill out a key points worksheet. 8. Answer the activity questions. 9. Respond to the thought question.

5 R EADING T EST 1 After reading two articles from our textbook “Face Facts” and “Silent Language”, students answer 10 multiple choice questions about the articles. They are able to use the textbook during the test.

6 B OOK T ALK #2 Students write a short paper (no more than 1 page) of what they read during the week in their independent reading books. They need to include: Name of Book Pages read this week Summary (6-8 sentences) Most shocking/interesting/favorite moment so far OR a question you might have for the author Interesting or unknown vocabulary with definitions (at least 2)
