2. Critical Reading (pages 88-93)
Today we will be focused on long reading comprehension questions, which are part of the two 25 minute Critical Reading sections AND the one 20 minute Critical Reading section.
In these Critical Reading sections, passages will be 70 to 90 lines long. One section will contain a dual passage: two separate passages giving contrasting viewpoints on one topic.
The questions are arranged in rough chronological order, not in order of difficulty.
The Critical Reading passages are simply longer versions of the Short Reading passages; all the previous strategies you’ve learned will also help for this section.

3. The Princeton Review Method
Read the “blurb” (introductory sentence which describes the passage).
Go to the questions and figure out what parts of the passage you need to read.
Read only what you need to answer the question. Remember, the questions are in chronological order. Once you get your answers, stop reading!
TIP: Use your strategies for the process of elimination; try to get rid of at least one or two answers. Remember our Short Reading strategies: read the first and last sentence of the passage; watch extreme language (“all,” “never,” “only,” etc.); look for key terms or phrases; always put vocabulary in context.

5. Dual Passage Questions
With dual passages, you should:
First, answer the questions based on the first passage. (Read the questions for passage #1, read passage #1, answer questions for passage #1.)
Next, answer the questions based on the second passage, as above.
Finally, answer the questions that refer to both passages.

6. Line Reference & Lead Word Questions
Pay attention to clues in the question on where to go to find an answer!
Examples:
In paragraph 4, why does the author mention Harry McCallan?
The author cites “many interesting creatures” on lines in order to . . .

Remember: only read enough to get what you need for an answer!

8. General Questions
Usually there is one general question per passage. Examples:
The main idea of the passage is to . . .
The passage is best described as . . .
The author uses the example of _____ primarily to…
Answer these last!
After answering other questions and perhaps re-reading the opening line of each paragraph, you’ll probably have a good guess at the answer.

9. Critical Reading Checklist
Read the beginning blurb.
Answer line reference and lead word questions.
Answer vocab-in-context questions.
Answer general questions.
With dual passages, read and answer questions for passage #1, read and answer for passage #2, then answer questions for both.
