13 Settlers in the Middle Colonies Settlers in the Middle Colonies came from all over Europe from many different backgrounds. In fact, the Middle Colonies were the most diverse group of colonies. People in the Middle Colonies came from England, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Denmark, and Germany.

14 Settlers in the Middle Colonies Most settlers came to the Middle Colonies hoping to begin a new life. They wanted the opportunity to have religious freedom, own land and have a fresh start. Many people in the Middle colonies came over as indentured servants. Indentured servants were people who agreed to work as a servant to pay off their debts (money they owed).

22 The Quaker’s Beliefs The Quakers believed in tolerance, equality and a simple lifestyle. They believed in treating Native Americans fairly and paying them for their land. They also refused to fight in wars (Pacifists) or pay dues to the Church of England. Eventually, the Quakers would become a dominant group in the fight to end the slave trade.

23 -Quakers believed in an “inner light” that could guide people to salvation. -They also believed that everyone was equal in the eyes of God.

27 Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn in 1681 Penn is the proprietor of colony Pennsylvania founded for religious freedom for Quakers who were escaping religious persecution at the hands of the Church of England Quakers are all about religious tolerance Penn set up colonial assemblies in Pennsylvania and wrote Pennsylvania’s first constitution.

29 The Quakers Due to the fact that the Quaker religion was all about tolerance, equality and kindness, the capitol of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia has the city motto of “the city of brotherly love”.

37 Geography and Climate of the Middle Colonies The landscape of this region ranged from rich soil to the wooded mountains. The growing season in the Middle Colonies was longer than the growing season in New England. The colonies in this region have hot summers and cold winters.

38 Geography and Climate of the Middle Colonies Due to the longer growing season and shorter, less intense winters, agriculture (farming) played a fairly significant role in the Middle Colonies. Farmers in the Middle Colonies raised a wide variety of crops and livestock (animals). One of their major crops was “grain”.

48 Economy in the Middle Colonies Besides agriculture, other industries in the middle colonies included, iron work, trade, lumbering and craftsmanship. Iron was important to the middle colonies because of the large amounts of iron ore that could be found in the area.

50 Economy of the Middle Colonies Due to the fact that the middle colonies were in the middle, trade was also crucial to the economy. Craftsmen, blacksmiths and artisans would prepare goods to be bought and sold as people moved through the middle colonies.
