2 When and how did slavery first start in America? Spanish and Portuguese first brought slaves to the Americas In the 1500s. This then caused the English to be active in the slave trade.

3 How was the Magna Carta, Parliament, and the English Bill of Rights linked? They were each made by the English and were formed by each other. the English parliament was formed under the Magna Carta, and the Bill of Rights included some rights listed in the Magna Carta. All three as well protected peoples rights.

4 How did the nation try but fail to deal with growing sectional differences? When the new western territories were added debate went on how to keep the power equal. The Compromise or 1850 failed and popular sovereignty for Kansas lead to fighting. After Lincoln won election Civil War broke out.

5 How did American literature and art have an impact on American life? Once they began to explore American themes and work people began creating many of their own stuff. Transcendentalism a movement that sought to explore the relationship between humans and nature through emotions rather than through reason, affected the things people did. For example Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne began to change the tone of American literature. They explored the areas of psychology. Walt Whitman wrote about celebrating democracy.

6 How did cotton affect the social and economic life of the south? Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin made cotton production a lot faster. This caused slaves to increase in population but many resisted.

7 How did the Louisiana Purchase increase the likelihood of wars in the west? More debate on whether or not the states in the purchase should be entered as free or slave state.

8 How did people, places, and things affect the outcome of the Civil War? Both the North and South used their advantages to help them. North had almost all the nations factories, more farmland and a bigger population. South would be fighting on their home front and they had the nations best officers on their side. New more advanced weapons made fighting more dangerous.

9 How did the United States Constitution overcome the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and provide for the organization of the new government? A bill of rights was added and the Northwest Ordinance made a territory into a state. Many believed that a stronger federal government was needed. The Virginia Plan was than brought up which called for a government with 3 branches. The Great Compromise also set up a congress with 2 houses.

10 Why did hostility between the North and South continue even after the Civil War? Because the south had lost and they did not want to give up slavery or give rights to African Americans.

11 How did politics change in the “Age of Jackson?” Democracy was spread more by him and suffrage was extended. He also brought back the 2-party system and national conventions also started being held. He also gave more power to the common people.
