4/2/2015 ENERGY SECTOR REPUBLIC OF RWANDA NORTHERN PROVINCE RULINDO DISTRICT

Introduction Rulindo District needs to continue mobilizing all its population to join organized settlement where they can access easily to different infrastructures such as water, electricity and health services, and many others.  It targets to call upon private sector and other partners and facilitate them to speed up Investment in the use of alternative and renewable sources of energy (Solar & Biogas) for electricity connectivity.

Electrification in Sectors All sectors of Rulindo District have main electricity grid lines. 50/71 Cells have access to electricity. There are ongoing projects to cover the remaining Cells in Cyungo, Rukozo, Kinihira, Tumba, Bushoki, Murambi, Ngoma and Mbogo Sectors.

TYPES OF ENERGY USED Connected to electricity : 21.2% ( 14 308 /67 492 HH) BIOGAZ: 250 constructed Biogas Plants (2014-2015) COOK STOVES (Rondereza): 52 110/ 67 492 HH Solar energy : 120 (Schools, Health centers, Private sector) WIND ENERGY: not used in Rulindo District PEAT PLANT : not used in Rulindo District

Link between Energy development and security Energy contributes to socio-economic development in Rulindo. For example, we have socio-economic development projects including: Urbanisation (Kinini Village, Shyorongi and other centres) Rulindo Cultural center at Kirenge, Rusiga Hospitals and health centers Schools Public institutions offices Public lighting Households

Energy contributes to the security:  Job creation  Rapid urbanization  Promotion of ICT  Protection of environment (Reduction of firewood and charcoal use)  Road and centers lighting : public lighting (20.2Km ) plays a great importance to the security  water Supply Systems: With electricity potable water supply systems are constructed through electrical pumps.

The potential and diversity of energy resources in the district  Rivers like Muyanza, Base, Bahimba can generate micro hydro-power.  Presence Peat in different marchlands  Renewable energy development (biogas): large number cattle due to GIRINKA program

Existing policies and other instruments that support energy production utilization ONGs : PAREF, NAFA have contributed to tree planting (reforestation) for around 100 Ha of old forests in the different areas of the District. Promotion of Private Sector Investment in the use of alternative and renewable sources of energy (Solar & Biogas) for electricity connectivity. Partners: DISTRICT, MININFRA, REG, Private Sector and others
