2 Basic Course Information No more than two unexcused absences from class are allowed. Attendance at three or more campus events, one to be a meeting of the Pace Computer Society. UNV 101 is pass/fail. A pass counts for one credit but does not affect your QPA. A fail counts for 0 credits and is reflected in your QPA. Failure is usually due to three or more class absences. The class meets for two hours and provides one credit toward graduation. The class begins at 10:10 and ends at 12:00. Anyone more that 30 minutes late will be counted as absent. There will be no final exam.

3 Important Fall 2007 Dates Rosh Hashanah – September 12, evening and September 13, all day – no classes Library tour – September 18 at 10:10 Yom Kippur – September 21, evening and September 22, all day – no classes October 30 – Last day to withdraw without academic approval November 13 – Last day to withdraw with academic approval. November 21 – 24 – Thanksgiving break December 10, 11, 12, 14 – study days December 13, 15 – regular classes

6 Area around the University City Hall and City Hall Park South Street Seaport Wall Street Battery Park Century 21- clothes, linens, appliances J&R – music, computers, appliances, cameras, DVDs Many restaurants, fast food places, bars

7 Faculty Full time  Professors – full, associate, assistant  Instructors Adjunct – part time, often have interesting full time jobs Titles – simplest to use the term ‘professor’ for everyone Offices – full time have offices, adjuncts usually do not Office hours – Professors usually list these on the syllabus. Make note of them and use them.

8 Clubs and organizations Pace Computer Society – meets on Wednesdays from 12:20 to 1:15 in the conference room on the 2 nd floor of 163 William St. Many other clubs and events will be available

9 Help with your courses Computer courses – Room 202 on the 2 nd floor of 163 William St. Tutoring Center – Second floor of 41 Park Row Writing Center – Second floor of the library

10 Time management Study areas – library, student union, empty classrooms Keep a schedule and plan when you will work on each class. Do your homework right away, particularly in your math classes. Be sure to allow time for meals and relaxation. If you have a job, factor in the time required for it.

11 “The stone age did not end because we ran out of stones.” Assignment: Write a short essay that will answer the following questions:  Who said this quote and what did he mean?  What was the stone age and when (approximately) did it begin?  When did the stone age end, and why?  What materials might we run out of ourselves? Use a computer to type up and print out your answers. Use full sentences.

12 Next class, September 18 Meet in the front area of the library at 10:10 AM. Hand in the answers to the questions in the previous slide at that time. Return to the classroom, W625, after the library tour. If you miss the tour, you may be able to make it up by attending a different one.
