3 A Historical Study On The Life Of Italian Composer

4 Mr. Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

5 Born in Cremona, Italy He Is the Oldest Child of Baldassare and Maddelena Monteverdi

6 In Cremona As a Teen He studies music at Cremona Cathedral under maestro di cappella (music director) Marc' Antonio Ingegneri. He becomes an accomplished musician. He begins to compose and publish his musical works.

7 Monteverdi The Musician at Mantua Worked for the influential Gonzaga Family. He was appointed as suonatore di vivuola (violin player) to Duke Vincenzo I.

8 Life in Venice Monteverdi was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of St. Marks.

9 Monteverdi Married Claudia de Cattaneis, a court singer. They had three children.

10 His Musical Compositions Includes: Motets- a polyphonic choral composition on a sacred text usually without instrumental accompaniment. Canzonettas- a part-song resembling but less elaborate than a madrigal. Masses- a musical setting for the ordinary of the Mass. Ballets- a theatrical art form using dancing, music, and scenery to convey a story, theme, or atmosphere. Oratorios- a lengthy choral work usually of a religious nature consisting chiefly of recitatives, arias, and choruses without action or scenery.

11 However, He Is Noted For His Development Of: Madrigals-a complex polyphonic unaccompanied vocal piece on a text. & Operas-a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment and orchestral overtures and interludes.

14 Monteverdi the Communicator In addition to composing music, Monteverdi loved to write letters many of which have been collected and preserved.

15 Claudio Monteverdi Composed music during the late Renaissance and early Barogue periods. It is believed that he “...was one of the most gifted and prolific composers...”(MacClintuck 1982, 176)
