1 RBIF-0103-G1Probability and Statistics Prof. M. Partensky Brandeis University - Spring 2003 Group Project Using Statistics and Mathematica to Analyze Body Temperatures Vaishali Khamamkar Timothy Foley

2 Statistics and Mathematica in the Biological Sciences Our Audience –Biologists – Interested in the science we are presenting –Mathematicians – Interested in the statistics and mathematics that we use –Computer Scientists – Interested in our use of the Mathematica software package

3 Study area – The measure of Human and Animal Body Temperature 3.Predicting Ovulation with Basal Body Temperature 1.Human Body Temperature – the Myth of 98.6° Fahrenheit 2.Squirrel Temperature – Hibernation

4 Concluding Remarks We found several interesting areas of study related to body temperature We learned things that we did not know or expect Our knowledge of Statistics was broadened by this project We found Mathematica to be a powerful and useful tool (once we got the hang of it!)
