September, 2007 Jim Blackburn California State University Welcome and Admissions Update

CSU Counselor Conference Progress Report  2006 Attendance = almost 5000  Projected 2006 Attendance = could reach 6000  During CY 06-07 CSU enrolled 50,461 freshmen and 60,560 new transfers. (almost 7% annual increase in freshmen ) Applications for Fall 2007 total over 640 K (12% increase over Fall 06) (plus over 80K apps to other terms to make nearly ¾ of a million apps)

Other Results of Our Working Together  CSU conferred 93 K more degrees last year (about 4500 of these CSU alumni “studied abroad”)  Over 2 million persons and 1/10 of CA workers are CSU Alumni Including: 2/3 of all CA engineers 4/5 of those who keep the State running, e.g. teachers, criminal justice professionals, social workers and public administrators.

The CSU is still a “good deal”  Of the CSU’s over 4 billion dollar budget –Nearly 60 % is provided by taxpayers –Less than ¼ comes from student fees –Student fees (about $3500) are among the very lowest in US –CSU “raises more $ than is paid by students in fees

For some Students- the CSU is really a good deal!!!!!!  Over 1.5 BILLION dollars is financial aid was awarded to CSU students in 06-07.  CSU fees increased by about $300 per student  But at least 146,000 CSU students experienced no fee increase

Fall 2007 Admissions Cycle opens 10/1  Apply early  Use CSU Mentor  Have a Plan B, C, D……  Use Re-routing if offered  Don’t Forget “CTE” in “a-g”

Only Five CSU campuses impacted for Freshmen in 07-08  San Luis Obispo  San Diego  Long Beach  Fullerton  Pomona

Transfer Impaction for 07 08  SLO all programs are impacted at SLO at all levels  SDSU most programs  Long Beach many programs  Other 20 campuses impacted in 0 to six programs

New Stuff for 07-08  Campus admissions differences are likely to increase  CSU is “gearing up” to align with UC re lab science requirement (perhaps by 2011)  SAT/ACT writing score will not be used for 08-09 CSU freshmen admissions  EAP results are available on –line and on STAR Report

Questions I do not want to discuss  CAHSEE  Lower division (including FTF) students must be HS grads to enroll  Absent a HS diploma- ONLY a GED or passing the CA High School Proficiency Exam can be used as substitute for secondary school graduation

Somewhat Centralized ACT Score Receipts  Within CSUMentor there are now two ways to send ACT scores to additional CSU campuses –Via the Mentor ACT Manager site existing scores may be redirected –Via a “check off” and “pull down” at the end of the CSUMentor application –ACT scores must first have been sent to at least one CSU campus

Things you may not know about the CSU  17 CSU campuses have no “majority race”  CSU students “studied abroad” in 50 different nations (during 06-07)  Ten CSU alumni from seven different CSU campuses have become NASA astronauts  12 CSU campuses among the top 20 US comprehensive institutions in alumni, who earn doctoral degrees

Questions, Comments, Rebuttals, Errata  ???????????????????
