8. 7 Why use computers? For academic work: Word processing. Bibliographic database search. Access to on-line nursing journals & books. Communication: E-mail. Discussion lists & text chat. Nurses MUST be computer literate: Computers are in every area of the medical profession. NHS want computer literate nursing staff.

13. 12 Network Access – Facilities on DoHS Sites DoHS has its own computer network with IT facilities on NHS trust sites. Health Sciences Student Computer Facilities: York District Hospital: 6 computer IT Lab. Scarborough Hospital: 5 Computer IT Lab and 4 Computers in the Library. Harrogate District Hospital: 4 PCs in a multi-media study room in the library. Northallerton Hospital: 5 Computers available.

Different network area (P drive instead of M/H drive) Different printing facilities. You will need to arrange access rights to different DoHS sites. 15. 14 User ID Number Password How to Access the UoY network? The reverse side of the University Library card. The User ID is always letters & numbers i.e. ijc4 The password is a number proceeded by several zeros i.e. 000123456 Ignore the zeros just use the numbers = 123456

16. 15 Logging on. Press the keyboard to activate the computer. Press ‘Ctrl,Alt & Delete’ to access login prompt. Check where you are logging on to Logon to where panel: ADSVAYORK AEWPC41 (this computer) CSRVADYORK CSRVADYORK Enter username & Password.

17. 16 E-mail Access at the University of York Student E-mail on campus uses Microsoft Outlook 2002. E-mail Problems. strange error messages & faults. 3 ways to access e-mail home. Download (unsupported). Using Outlook Express, Netscape, Opera mail etc. NOT AOL or Any Web mail (Yahoo etc). Forwarding E-mail can be forwarded to ANY e-mail account. York Webmail Service. Guides on the Computing Service web site.

18. 17 Department of Health Studies Student Intranet The DoHS implemented a student Intranet at the end of 2000. Work in progress until Uni have a VLE. It is accessible to any student studying with the Department and accessed via any computer with an Internet connection. You will need your computer login details to access it (I.D.& Password).

Specific Teaching Resources: Teaching notes. PowerPoint Presentations. Reading Lists. Handouts. Assignment Details. Web Resources: Useful Web site addresses & E-Mail Address Book. Asynchronous discussion group (Bulletin Board) Link to software (chat room)

20. 19 Using the Internet. The Internet web browsers used at UoY are Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. Starting a Internet web browser: Windows Start button followed by Programs then Network Access then choose the web browser. Opens with UoY home Page (if it doesn’t click on the Home button). Locate the DoHS Student Intranet.

21. 20 Downloading Your Timetable from the student Intranet Don’t print the whole thing – print only a page (week) at a time. Best to download it to a computer or floppy disk and view. To download (right click on the timetable link on the student Intranet), Then left click ‘save target as’ - Save As box appears – save the file (my documents or floppy disk). Locate the excel file and open. (use View and Zoom to choose 75% or 100%) use the arrows and tabs to find the week you want. Re-save the timetable.

23. 22 The ATHENS authentication system controls access to databases such as: NISS, BIDS, EDINA MIMAS. Ovid Biomed Several of the databases available at the University of York are now controlled by ATHENS. Learning Resources

24. 23 Computer Literacy and Skills System (CLaSS). CLaSS software is a series of tutorials designed to help DoHS students with computer and information literacy. It was created to: Build on the skills you may already have. Help develop computer literacy skills you may need. Be available to recap at any time. It is available on all University and DoHS computers It can be accessed via: The Health Studies subfolder in the Teaching folder on a University computer.
