COMP2002 Lecturecopyright DMU 2001 COMP2002 Managing OT Projects

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 OT Projects OO Iterative Development exciting less rigid less predictable more successful BUT More difficult to manage and control

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 Problems in OT projects As there are no definitive steps: how is progress determined how do you know whether you are on schedule or over budget how do you accommodate reassessment and revision without loosing control

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 6 practical tips on OO PM 1.Develop Large Systems in Small Steps 2.Manage Iteration and Maintain Focus 3.Measure Your Progress 4.Update Estimates and Plans Fast and Frequently 5.Remember Reuse 6.Teams Should Focus on Work; Work should focus on Teams

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 1. Develop Large Systems in Small Steps Incorporate the Iterative and Incremental lifecycle into the project plan Keep each increment small Keep analysing, designing and building small pieces that can be extended during the next build Keep each iteration small - complete the cycle within a week Give each iteration its own schedule

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 2. Manage Iteration and Maintain Focus Involve users more frequently with more input and smaller system products Manage users input and enthusiasm Introduce a method of recording and postponing ideas which are outside scope Maintain focus on the task at hand Have clear, visible statements of objectives for each cycle

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 3. Measure Your Progress Record results from each cycle in a standard format, such as: time spent on each activity, the analysis or the coding code performance - speed, efficiency, memory product tests, reusability, reliability meeting user expectations Make elements of OO methods elements of measurement e.g.classes, collaborations

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 4. Update Estimates and Plans Fast and Frequently Use results to regularly update estimates and project plans Track each cycle and evaluate them Build on knowledge from prior cycles Adjust project plans to allow for emerging problem areas Plan to Replan

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 5. Remember Reuse Reuse existing classes wherever possible When developing new classes, build with reuse in mind Encourage project teams to use a reuse and pattern library

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 6. Teams Should Focus on Work; Work Should focus on Teams PM must work on team dynamics Promote team working Reward team effort De-emphasise individual roles Provide a suitable team-working environment - no interuptions, appropriate workspace, adequate supplies and resources

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 OO Project Managers Project Managers involved in an Object Technology project should: be familiar with OO concepts keep up to date with current articles, as their staff almost certainly will be ready to manage the change to OO allow time for the change provide commitment to change

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 Pilot Projects emphasize the advantages of OO methods pave the way to successful change on a larger scale measure new technology against existing development strategies

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 Summary Managing OO development means managing organisational change Time must be committed for development of new project plans, evaluation techniques, standards Management must be commited to change

COMP2002 LectureCopyright DMU 2001 Reference This slide set is based on an article in Object Magazine, December 1997 7(10), page 44 Title: Managing Object Technology Projects, Practical tips and a pilot program for finding success in managing OO Projects Authors: David Bellin and Susan Suchman Simone
