3 New buildings & major refurbishment projects Generally to high standards of insulation and energy controls. Passive ventilation. BREEAM ratings.  Current projects to include further measures, CHP, green roof, rainwater recovery.

4 Transport Different circumstances at each University site. Dialogue and pressure on public transport providers. Varley - Falmer shuttle bus. Falmer user permit system. Student residences. Travel plans.

5 Waste & recycling The department of Estate and Facilities Management is responsible for Waste Management which includes recycling E&FM are aware that existing recycling opportunities are not well advertised and that there is a lack of consistency across each site, as to what can be recycled. A new approach to recycling has been recently agreed and further information about this will be communicated on Uni Info and on E&FM's intranet site in due course The new arrangement will be in place for the start of term

6 Landscaping & biodiversity Low key activity in the past, designated wild areas, bird boxes etc. New initiative to set up biodiversity group. Biodiversity Action Plan.

7 Energy Energy Manager in post since 1998. Total energy and water expenditure £1.4 million – 10,000 tonnes CO2. Reduction in total energy consumption since 1998 of 11.8%, water – 37.5 %. Voluntary member of UK ETS. Exceeded 8.8% target over 5 years. Building Maintenance initiatives. (Water saving measures, lighting controls, rainwater recycling,). Solar panel installation at Hillbrow swimming pool.

8 Energy continued New buildings. Evaluation of other technologies. Forthcoming government initiatives- Carbon Reduction Commitment.
