Why? Faculty, Staff and Administrators are in a position to teach environmental knowledge Colleges and Universities are contributing to the waste problem We have the resources to conduct research to help solve some of the problems Colleges and Universities are visible within their communities It is unlikely that students will get Green Education anywhere else

Day After Tomorrow

greenribbonpledge.org climatehotmap.org/

Human Impact I = PCT Population grows 2% Consumption grows 2% P ∙ C could double every 18 years Can T improve 30-fold in the next century?

What? Environmental Education should teach how to change the way we live teach understanding of our relationship to the world and our role in it

How? Cross-Disciplinary Practical Historic and local perspective

Sustainability and the Green Campus: -A Chemist’s Perspective- “Sustainability” can be defined as transforming our way of living to ensure that we meet the educational, economic, and community needs of the present society without hurting the needs of future generations. All aspects of the campus community must be involved through education, research and community outreach.

Critical Factors in Developing a Green or Sustainable Campus Utilize consumables derived from renewable resources Utilize safer materials Cost Producing an Educated Workforce Role in Decision Making

What are we Currently Doing? Undergraduate Education and Research: “Green Pedagogy” BSC Undergraduate Environmental Research Symposium OutReach and Service Learning

Undergraduate Education and Research: “Green Pedagogy” Does not apply to only chemistry, and does not require new courses; incorporate into existing courses Focus is on the lab component of current courses Research projects involving environmental analysis; “Green Synthesis” from renewable materials using less hazardous materials Honors projects that are based on Green Chemistry alternatives

Potential applications of Polylactic Acid Biodegradable polymer from corn Exhibits properties that are equivalent to or better than many petroleum-based plastics.

A “Greener” Campus with Polylactic Acid Products fibers for clothing disposable eating utensils disposable diapers clear “plastic” food packaging

Potential applications of Poly-Lactic Acid to a “Greener” BSC Campus fibers for clothing disposable eating utensils and plates disposable diapers clear “plastic” food packaging

Potential Applications of “Biodiesel” Can be used in normal diesel engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is easy to use, nontoxic, biodegradable and free of sulfur and aromatics Alternative fuel from vegetable oil Can be blended with normal petroleum diesel Can be used in normal diesel engines with little or no modifications.

Synthesis of “Biodiesel” by Yui Nozaki

Combustion of Vegetable Oil

Combustion of “Biodiesel” from Vegetable Oils Canola Oil Vegetable Oil

Talloires

Talloires Agreement www.ulsf.org 1.Increase Awareness of Environmentally Sustainable Development 2.Create an Institutional Culture of Sustainability 3.Educate for Environmentally Responsible Citizenship 4.Foster Environmental Literacy For All 5.Practice Institutional Ecology 6.Involve All Stakeholders 7.Collaborate for Interdisciplinary Approaches 8.Enhance Capacity of Primary and Secondary Schools 9.Broaden Service and Outreach Nationally and Internationally 10.Maintain the Movement Where we have been ~~ Where we are going

What we do now Environmental coursework –Philosophy –Chemistry –Biology –Physics –Management –Earth Science –Geography –Literature Health and Safety Office Energy Bear Recycling Program

What We Could Do Ask “green campus” questions in all campus planning endeavors –Information technology –Transportation –Parking –Building –Curriculum –Scheduling –Teaching materials –Food service

More We Can Do Foster shared purpose Pedal Power Service Learning & Outreach “What Can I Do?” education

Infrastructure & Venues Green Campus Team Resource Center CART External funding Field Trips Internships Impact High School Curriculum New graduate programs New undergraduate concentrations Regional Conference

Going Forward?
