2 History Born in a town called Itabia, Sao Paulo, Brazil Entered the University of Sao Paulo for a degree in Natural History inspired by an interest in insects. Graduated in 1945. Studied under Prof. Kurt Rawitscher famous for describing Brazilian flora.

3 Major Accomplishments Before Joly the marine algae of Brazil was virtually undecribed. A famous professor at Universidad de Sao Paulo. Many generations were influenced by his many publications and books. Recipient of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

6 Awards and Prizes Recipient of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to Assist Research and Artistic Creation in 1966. Joly Prize established for students of phycology by the Brazilian Society of Ficology.
