5. 培育人才 - 大學的責任 追求世界一流、頂尖研究成果或許是許多大學的理想， 培育人才卻是每一個大學的責任，尤其是大學本科生的 優質教育成效。 大學的第一目的乃是「教學」。教育理念和方式直接影 響成效。 大學可以沒有大樓，然不可沒有良（大）師。專業核心 課程 (core education) 固然重要，但通才（全人）教育和 跨領域學習，外加生活學習和品格教育尤其是大學的核 心價值。 在全球化、專業化、少子化、大學普及、知識爆炸、倫 理智慧下滑的二十一世紀，教的品質和學的成效更顯為 重要。

6. 博雅教育 (Liberal Arts Education) 1/2 博雅教育是培育學生在知識上成為一個「自由人」而非「奴隸」。歐 洲中古世紀的「博雅教育」範疇包含：文法、辭語、邏輯、幾何、代 數、音樂、天文等科目。 The term “liberal” refers to the nature of education for a freeman as opposed to a slave, while “arts” refers to the medieval, European disciplines of grammar, rhetoric, logic, geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy. 博雅教育的精髓不是機械式地教導某些課程而已，乃是涵蓋一群向度、 價值觀、信念，和不可或缺的「人的因數」，那就是師生間密切接觸。 However, the very essence of liberal arts education goes much beyond a simple set of courses which can be “mechanically” offered; rather, it embraces a set of orientations, values, beliefs, and norms that require “human touches” by the faculty, such as, ideally, near unselfish devotion and commitment to liberal arts education.

(Elite education: Learn to be a well-informed citizen.) 博雅教育是相對於職業或專業教育而言，其目的在「人格導向的〈安 身立命〉與〈修身養性〉之學」。他不只是通識教育的知識，而更進 一步的強化通才教育在生活上的實踐。 Liberal Arts Education, as opposed to professional or specialized education, is a personality-oriented process of self-identification and self-realization.
