2 Global Justice Global Justice Movement The global justice movement emerged in response to the gradually rise of transnational business organizations, and the efforts of these organizations to more centrally manage global free trade and other international economic transactions.

4 Global Justice Global Justice Tactics: Protest Organizational Meetings To disrupt and challenge the corporate globalization process, groups decided to target the meetings of these organizations. 5 Global Justice Who/What is the Global Justice Movement? As a movement, it has neither a clear name, leadership or structure. Organizational Structure Organizationally, the global justice movement is highly decentralized and anti-authoritarian. It lacks, and in fact discourages stable leadership, and top-down organization.

6 Global Justice Global Justice Movement: Organizational Example DAN: Direct Action Network Played a leading role in Seattle protests, and originally proposed the idea of shutting down the WTO meeting. 8 Global Justice DAN: Direct Action Network Affinity Group: Roles Each member of the group typically has a specific role 1) Medic (First Aid) 2) Legal Aid (Avoid Arrest) 3) Spoke (Attends SpokesCouncil Meetings) 4) “Action Elf” (Supplies, Spirits)

9 Global Justice Plan in Seattle: Divide the City Into Sectors The plan in Seattle was to divide the city “into thirteen sectors, with an affinity cluster responsible for each sector.” It would all be directed by a spokescouncil. Spokescouncil Structure “The structure was flexible, and tactically powerful, and the policy, trying to clear the streets, resorted to increasingly brutal methods…”
