1 WebSPIRS SilverplatterARC2 Databases include: British Nursing Index – Cinahl – ERIC – Geobase – GeoRef – ICONDA – Mathsci – Medline – SERFILE – Sociological Abstracts – Sports Discus

2 From Home, enter University Home page (http://www.gre.ac.uk). In University, log on and select Internet Explorer On University Home page Select Library and Online Learning

3 From Library Home page select Electronic Information Products

4 Select View Electronic Databases Or, if unsure which Database required, select View Electronic Databases (with descriptions)

5 Choose Database from Drop-down lists or from List with descriptions. From within University, select either Intranet or Athens/Silverplatter Arc2. Externally select Athens/Silverplatter Arc2. Helpsheet, available from Database Help files, then Webspirs/Silverplatter Arc2 databases

6 Through Intranet: Username and Password available from Library Enquiry desk on production of Resource card N.B. May not work through student network, so use Athens Through Athens: Log in, then select Silverplatter Arc2 from list

7 Tick boxes next to required Databases and click on Start searching Or click on + sign next to Database to list years covered, tick box next to required years, then click on Start searching. N.B. Clicking on ‘i’ will display information about the Database

8 If unsure which Database to use, select Suggest databases. Type in search term, then click on Suggest databases again. Databases will be ranked according to number of hits.

9 If Database unavailable, try again later

10 Type in search terms. If searching for a phrase, enclose phrase in inverted commas to ensure words searched as a phrase. Then click on Search

11 Use Help screen and Dropdown “How do I…” menu for advice in formulating search Database guide gives more information about the database and lists the fields

12 Index will show terms used in indexing articles and can be used to check search terms. Thesaurus, if available, cross- references to preferred indexing terms. N.B. Thesaurus not available for all databases

13 Terms can be linked using And, Or or Not (known as Boolean search operators) And searches for 2 or more terms together Or searches for one term or another Not excludes entries containing term following

14 Wildcard or Truncation characters can be used to extend the search. The Wildcard character (?) substitutes for one character or for none eg behavio?r finds behaviour or behavior Truncation (*) substitutes for zero or more characters, eg environment* finds environment, environmental etc.

15 Searches can be limited by date Or by clicking on Change Then selecting limits from those listed

16 Search history displays previous searches These can be combined with new terms in subsequent searches. Precede search number with # in Search box Or tick boxes then click on Combine and search using and, or

17 Search results display on lower half of screen in batches of 10 Mark useful records by ticking box Call up next batch of records by clicking on Navigational arrows

18 Book records display Author(s) Title Publication year Journal records display Author(s) Title of article Publication year Title of Journal with volume, issue and page numbers

19 Selecting Complete record displays further information This often includes an Abstract which gives further information about the publication and Descriptors used for indexing. Clicking on one Descriptor will call up other records indexed by that term Complete record does NOT include the full text of the article

20 Mark to print out long Complete record or click on Show all results to return to short record form N.B. Some Complete records include very long abstracts: check before printing. Short record includes all details necessary to find item

21 Once search complete, marked records can be Printed, Saved to disc or Emailed to yourself

22 If Printing, do NOT Clear marked records until printout produced and checked Whether Printing, Saving to disc, or Emailing, fields for inclusion can be selected If Emailing, remember to insert email address

23 Then Logout of WebSPIRS before checking the Book or Journal titles on the list against the Library catalogue and the Swetswise Electronic Journals
