Analytical Validation of Commercial Wood-Burning Stove Performance By Troy Nietschmann and David Garrett OBJECTIVES: 1.Determine outside Temperature conditions that this 29.3 kWatt wood- burning stove would maintain an inside equilibrium temperature of 70 o F for two unique 2000 sq. foot homes. 2. Determine whether this claim is reasonable.

Test Homes Simple Rectangular 45’x45’ Home Test Home #1 Wood Siding Test Home #2 Brick Siding

Problem Setup (Walls and Roof) 1/2” Gypsum Board k1=.052 W/ft*K 7/16” Plywood Sheathing k4=.0168 2x4” Wood Studs 16” on-center k3=.0366.05” TYVEK Homewrap k5=.008 4” Masonry Bricks k6=.22 or 3/4” Wood Panels k7=.0366 or 1/8” Rubber Shingles (for roof) k8=.04 4” Fiberglass Insulation k2=.0107 W/ft*K OUTSIDE : (T out )= ? h=20 INSIDE: (T in )= 70 o F h=3 A w (total) = 2552 sq. ft. (Walls) A r (total) = 2150 sq. ft. (Roof) q loss

Problem Setup (Floor) 3/4” Floor Board k1=.0366 W/ft*K 8” Thick Cement Slab k1=.335 W/ft*K Ground Constant Surface temp of 70 o F Ground Temp: (T out )= 40 INSIDE: (T in )= 70 o F h=3 A f (total) = 2000 sq. ft. (Floor) q loss

Calculations & Solution Solve for Outside Temperature!

Coldest Outside Temperature that the Mountaineer Wood-Burning Stove can maintain an equilibrium inside temperature of 70 o F in a 2000 sq. ft. home: (Wood Siding) 35 o F (Brick Siding) 30 o F Results & Conclusions This claim would only be true in FLORIDA !!! Excel Spreadsheet
