23 ASL TIPS: NOTICE THIS? Notice the sentence “ME TEACHER, YOU STUDENT.” You probably wondered what is that? That is called a gloss. It is how you translate the English sentences in ASL. You will learn how to gloss the sentences in ASL gloss for you to sign later in the lesson. Example: English: I am not Deaf. I am hearing. ASL: ME NOT DEAF. ME HEARING.

24 For this activity, I want you to create your own conversation with your partner by using what words you learn so far. Write in English sentences, then try to gloss it for translation in ASL, then sign it with your partner.

30 Fun Activity: TELEPHONE Game! One person will sign a word, and the student will turn to other student and sign exactly the same thing he/she was told, and so on. The last student in the back will come up to the host and sign to him/her.

31 Culture/Language Notes ● One-handed signs: they use only ONE dominant hand. ● Example: WHERE GO BATHROOM? ● Two-handed symmetrical signs: they use both dominant and nondominant (both) hands to form a sign. ● Example: WHAT, LIVE, AMERICA
