1 Legacies of Historical Globalization
Chapter 6

2 To what extent do the legacies of historical globalization affect peoples of the world.
Key Terms Legacy Depopulation Ethnocentrism Deindustrialization Eurocentrism Gross Domestic Product

3 What are some Legacies of Historical Globalization?
Legacy- is something that has been passed on by those who lived in the past. Some Legacies include: Political structures eg. Parliament, Building and Monuments eg. Houses of worship Oral Histories and Stories and Cultural Traditions and Celebrations

4 Ethnocentrism Ethnocentrism – refers to a way of thinking that centers on one’s own race and culture. Ethnocentric people believe that the only valid world view is their own. They often judge people according to their own beliefs, customs and traditions.

5 Eurocentrism Eurocentrism- is a form of ethnocentrism that uses European ethnic, national, religious and linguistic criteria to judge other people and their culture. In 1907, R. Bennett, Canada’s Prime Minister told B.C that: “(Canada) must remain a white man’s country.”

6 Eurocentrism Think about how we refer to the world:
The Middle East, The West, The Far East, Down Under. What is the reference point for these?

7 Activity “It is this consciousness of the inherent superiority of the European which has won for us India. However well educated and cleaver a native may be, and however brave he may prove himself, I believe that no (military) rank we can bestow on him would cause him to be considered an equal of the British officer. Lord Kitchener British Commander and Chief Quote is on p 138

8 How do Kitchener’s words reflect his Eurocentric views?
Which words in the quote illustrate Kitchener’s Eurocentric ideas? How would views like these have fostered a legacy of ethnocentric and Eurocentric attitudes in the British Empire?

9 Building Empires Between , the imperial powers greatly expanded their global empires. This mean that many indigenous people came under the control of imperial powers.

10 Suggest what these empires might have looked like in 1924 if the trend continued.
What event occurred in 1914 to interfere with empire building? How might the legacies of historical globalization be different today if the empire building trend had continued?

11 The Scramble for Africa
In the late 1800s the nation-states of Europe and the United States met in Berlin to divide Africa amongst themselves. This was done to avoid conflicts with the other imperial powers, to protect existing trade routes and to gain control of the continents natural resources, which included gold, diamonds and rubber.

12 By looking at the map, who was missing from the conference.
Hint the Conference contained European and American representatives. Read “The arrival of Europeans” on p 140. Read p141 and do Reflect and Respond
