1 Biotechnology, smoking and alcohol

2 Read this snippet of Insurgent and explain why you think biotechnology is important to life in a min 3 sentences “Biotechnology has been around for a long time, but it wasn’t always very effective,” Caleb says… “But Erudite scientists developed this highly effective mineral solution a while back. It was better for the plants than dirt. It’s an earlier version of that salve they put on your shoulder—it accelerates the growth of new cells.” - Insurgent by Veronica Roth

3 In the movie “The Hunger Games,” the Capitol (a term used to refer to what we would call the government) produced genetically enhanced birds called jabberjays to spy on rebels. Unexpectedly, these birds bred with mockingbirds, creating a new hybrid bird called the mockingjay. The Capitol did not intend for this to happen, and the bird became a symbol of rebellion. 1.Name at least 2 lessons can we draw about genetic engineering from these examples? 2.Could a scenario like this, where a genetically engineered organism hybridizes with a wild animal or plant, happen in the real world? Why or why not? Support your answer in min 3 sentences

6 Biotechnology in summary… Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life Biotechnology has led to many advances and new careers in medicine, agriculture, genetics, and science food Biotechnology affects us in every area of our lives: our food, water, medicine, and shelter Uses of modern biotechnology include: making medicine in large quantities, combating crime through DNA testing and forensic testing, removing pollution from soil and water (bioremediation), and improving the quality of agricultural crops and livestock products Areas such as genetic modification (GM) and cloning are controversial.
