divides land into narrow parcels stretching back from rivers, roads, or canals. Found in Canadian maritimes & Quebec, a remnant of French rule

47. Nucleated or Clustered are groups of houses that occur near a restricted resource such as a mine or logging site. Retail stores often occupy some larger buildings within the clusters. In many cases, the houses and/or commercial buildings are owned by the industrial, logging, or mining or company that developed the resource. These company towns may be named for the resource (Tin City, Leadville) or a relative of the owner (Edith, Smithville).

50. Dispersed Houses
Dispersed Houses are the dominant rural pattern for much of the United States. Each house sits amid some barns and other buildings on the parcel of land from which the occupants derive their livelihood. Building densities range from less than one per square mile in the dry plains of North Dakota to more than ten in the tobacco districts of North Carolina.
