2 WHERE? Nepal is situated between India and China. It’s famously known for the Brigade of Soldiers currently fighting for BRITISH ARMY for 200 years. (24 th April was our 200 th Anniversary). These soldiers are called ‘Gurkhas’ and were recruited by the British for their utmost bravery, resistance and high intelligence shown in Anglo- Nepalise War in 1814. Since then Gurkhas have served the British since 24 th April 1815 (official recruitment). It is the 41 st populous country in the world with 28 million people. Its capital city is Kathmandu. (Hit by the recent earthquake).

3 C ONTINUED … Contains 8 of world’s 10 highest peaks including Mount Everest. (8,848 M). WORLD’S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN NEPAL – CAUSED TERRIBLE AVALANCHES…

4 IN THE SPOTLIGHT! Recently Nepal has been on the news because of a 7.9 magnitude Earthquake has hit it with the aftershocks of 6.6 and 6.7 magnitude. This happened at 06:11 GMT on Saturday 25 th April, 2015, flattening large parts of the capital Kathmandu and causing devastation across the country include the Himalayas leading to Avalanches. Nepal’s worst natural disaster in 80 years. The Earthquake was so large and powerful, it reached Pakistan, China, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

5 Many of Nepal’s Historic sites are destroyed (Dharahara in Kathmandu – Right Pic). This will cause a loss of tourist attractions. ‘ You can destroy anything, but you can’t destroy history because the remains will still be a landmark as they were previously, Standing tall and proud over our great nation’ – Robinson Kandangwa.

7 AFTERMATH Believed to have killed more than 6,100 people as of 29 April 2015. Predicted to be over 10,000 + dead. (at least). More than 30,000 + Injured. The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 people. EU has donated $3 million to Nepal. UK has donated £15 million with help of experts and sent some Gurkhas (engineers) back to their country for relief. Hong Kong has given $6.45 million.

8 W HAT ARE WE DOING AS A SCHOOL TO HELP N EPAL ? Sixth Formers, Teachers and Staffs are ‘dressing down’ to raise money for this cause on 1 st May 2015.

9 PERSONAL MESSAGE ‘As a Gurkha's son, I have taken this matter to my heart. That is why I and other Nepalese students will be standing by the Terrace Café at break and lunch next week for anyone who feels they should like to make a personal, private donation for this good cause. This is optional and completely voluntary. If you could even donate a small sum of money, all the Nepalese families and I would very much appreciate it.
