3. There is widespread destruction in Nepal after a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday 25 th April. Hundreds of people are dead. Thousands more are injured. Lives are shattered. Many homes are destroyed or damaged. Families are left homeless. Roads are blocked and communications are down, which is hampering the relief effort.

4. The Habitat team in Nepal are on the ground, assessing families’ immediate needs and getting ready to respond. In the long term they will support families to rebuild homes and lives. Since 1997, Habitat Nepal has served 54,000 families. Using disaster resilient materials and technology, such as bamboo poles, were already an integral part of our house design. In recent years, Habitat disaster response teams have served 500,000 people in the wake of disasters, including Typhoon Haiyan in The Philippines and Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.
