Diverse Learning Styles Chad Powers

My Style I’m a picture of diversity! 94% Logical Mathematical (Makes sense-I’m a Science teacher!) 92% Naturalistic (Again with the Science!) 75% Interpersonal (My wife, mother, students, etc say I talk too much sometimes…) 75% Bodily Kinesthetic (I often believe I have undiagnosed ADHD!) I’m above 50% in everything except musical.

My Lesson I will be analyzing my Introductory Day for the Periodic Table Unit. There are some games, some songs, some lecture, and a worksheet. Some fun, some red faces, some new holes in my periodic table.

Applicable Styles Verbal-Linguistic -One of the easiest styles to cover, students will be listening, answering questions, and discussing how the elements fit into a table.

Logical-Mathematical -Typical for Science, we spend lots of time using this style. In this lesson, we will be sequencing the elements by atomic number and classifying them into groups.

Visual-Spatial -We will be using a great visual-the Periodic Table of Elements!

Bodily-Kinesthetic -As a part of this lesson, students will form into groups and have a pin-the-tail-on-the- element race at the big table in back!

Musical -The very first event of this unit is “The Element Song” by Tom Lehrer. We hand out lyrics and sing along. This year, it will be supplemented by my newly found treasure-the “Meet the Elements” video by They Might Be Giants. Meet the Elements

Interpersonal -Interpersonal skills are honed in the team race and in class discussion. There will be a significant amount of group work in this unit!

Skills not covered in this particular Lesson… Intrapersonal- this lesson does not provide much time for individual thought and reflection, however there is abundant self-reflection as the unit progresses. Naturalistic- We don’t spend any time working in the natural world in this lesson. However, we do some field work taking digital photographs later in the unit.

How can Technology Help?? I plan to use Podcasting and Blogging as a means of increasing the amount of intrapersonal work in this unit. Having students put their thoughts into words- either verbal or written-will aid in self reflection.
