In fact, there is a broad choice of information products available all under the heading of what is known as the IWS Documented News Service. MISSION of the IWS News Bureau The IWS News Bureau was originally developed to solve a key public policy issue - how to disseminate workplace studies, reports, and data issued by government entities (international, foreign countries, federal, state, and local) so that they reach interested faculty, researchers, practitioners, students, journalists, and the general public at the time of their release. Why is this considered a public policy issue? Governments provide funding and issue mandates to produce reports and data that address specific needs for an identified audience. Once the report is written and produced, there is usually no mandate to disseminate it to a broader audience. Public personnel will not distribute items without a mandate or funding to do so. Putting a document on a bookshelf or a website does not mean people will come to get it or view it. Hence, the potential utility of intellectual content is greatly limited. When knowledge and understanding are limited, the public is not served well. Having recognized this issue, the IWS News Bureau attempts to create strong relations with international intergovernmental agencies, foreign governments, and U.S. entities to distribute -- free of charge - their intellectual content. The IWS News Bureau expanded this original endeavor to include associations, labor unions, commercial entities, academic institutions, and any other reputable producer of workplace information. 5. What is the unique niche of the IWS News Bureau? As a journalistic endeavor, the IWS News Bureau set out to provide original source documentation, via links, behind the news and research of the day. In other words, instead of relying on journalists' analysis and interpretation of information, users of the service can view the full-text documents used by the journalists themselves and make their own analysis. This is why the service is called the IWS Documented News Service. One actually has access to the document in question. The service is best used via e-mail Most people prefer receiving the Weekly Bulletin. With this product, it is not necessary to monitor the numerous websites providing workplace information. Also, one does not have to remember to look at the IWS Documented News Service websites weekly. The information arrives once a week for an easy browse at your desk top. Anyone needing cutting edge, timely information with relevant content indicators will prefer the Daily Postings. The content All postings are selected to meet the research needs and interests of the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Industrial & Labor Relations. Those interests are so broad as to be useful to almost anyone interested in workplace related information. Consequently, in serving the needs of the school, the public is well- served. 5
