2 Language Olympics for 2007 Competition in Spanish, French and German Salt Lake School District – three schools Davis School District – six schools Scheduled Friday, 18 May 2007 Location: UTNG HQ in Draper UTNG providing judges, lunch & awards Schools provide language competitors

3 Language Olympics for 2007 Each high school will have eight competitors Two x Spanish teams One x French team One x German team Total of 72 competitors from nine high schools

4 Four Competitions Impromptu Power Word Gisting Jeopardy/Trivia Bowl

5 IMPROMPTU 2 Rounds: Preliminary & Final Preliminary: Teams may refer to dictionary during prep time Teams draw topic Three minutes to compose speech Speech must be one – two minutes Partner will interpret speech into English (One minute plus any time left over) Three minutes total for delivery

6 IMPROMPTU Finals: Three judges score speech and interpretation of Preliminary Round Scores of speaker and interpreter combined with top 3 teams advancing to final round

7 Power Word Team member gives clues to other team member who guesses word described Each card contains word to be guessed (the power word) plus two or four taboo words which may not be used by the clue giver Words are in target language Clues and guessing in target language Each round has 2 minutes 30 second time limit

8 Power Word Round Two: Same as round one but players switch roles Points awarded based on number of words guessed correctly

9 Gisting 2 Parts: Listening & Reading Team members work together Listening: After each cut – answer three questions (15 questions) Teams will hear 5 cuts in target language 2 minutes to answer questions before next cut Reading: Team members given three passages in target language to read Each text has 5 questions in English (15 questions) Twenty-five minute time limit

10 Jeopardy/Language Trivia Bowl Single Jeopardy 5 categories x 5 questions Teams divided into three groups of three teams each Winners of each group advance to Double Jeopardy Questions pertaining to geopolitical region where target language spoken Cultural and Social Political: e.g. presidents, capitals, flags Economic: e.g. monetary units Geographical Historical Vocabulary Verb Conjugations
