1. CHANGE OF COMMAND CEREMONY FOR 4 th CHEMICAL COMPANY, 1 ST BRIGADE SPECIAL TROOPS BN 19 July 2007 Camp Hovey Gymnasium Warrior March We’re born in France in seventeen, in the hell of the First World War. With infantry and proud Marines, we bravely fought amidst the cannon’s roar. The Warriors went across the Meuse and river Marne, our name and fame were won. We march home proudly with flags held on high – and they called us “Second to None!” The Army Song First to fight for the right and to build the Nation’s might, and the Army goes rolling along, proud of all we have done fighting till the battle’s won, and the Army goes rolling along. Then it’s hi, hi hey! The Army’s on its way count off the cadence loud and strong (two, three). For wher-e’er we go, you will always know that the Army goes rolling along.

2. The Change of Command is a military ceremony in which the departing commander assembles his troops for presentation to the incoming commander. The ceremony serves to inform the assembled Soldiers and Officers that they must respond to the leadership of the new Commander. The history of the Change of Command can be tracked back to the year 406 B.C. when Lysander took command of the Armies of Sparta. In the United States, there have been three Ceremonies that have influenced the ceremony that you are about to witness. The first two involved George Washington – One when he assumed command of the Continental Army beneath “Washington Elm” in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 3 July 1775 – The other when Washington gave his personal farewell to his Officers on 4 December 1783 at Faunces Tavern In New York. At the conclusion of the ceremony Washington passed between the ranks of Guard of Honor to the wharf from which he departed. A final event which influenced the Change of Command Ceremony occurred on 10 November 1862, when Major General George McClellan relinquished command of the Army of the Potomac to Major General Ambrose Burnside. These Ceremonies set the precedent for the modern day Change of Command Ceremony, which involves the traditional passing of the unit colors. HISTORY OF THE CHANGE OF COMMAND 4th Chemical Company, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion was constituted on 29 May 1930 in the regular Army and was then activated on 2 October 1930 at Manila, Philippine Islands. Although, during World War Two, 4th Chemical Company surrendered to the Japanese 14th Army on 9 April 1942 and later became inactivated in the Philippine Islands on 2 April 1946, their defense of the Philippine Islands earned battle streamers for LUZON, BATAAN and the DEFENSE OF THE PHILLIPINES. 4th Chemical Smoke Generator Company was re-designated on 21 August 1951 and activated on 4 September 1951 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After a re-organization and re-designated, 4th Chemical Smoke Generator Company then transformed into 4th Chemical Company on 1 October 1953. Although, 4th Chemical Company was inactivated on 15 June 1959 in Germany they fought under 34th AAA BDE at Camp Pieri and saw action in the Korean War. HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

3. On 16 September 1983, 4th Chemical Company was assigned to 2d Infantry Division and activated in Korea. On 20 June 2005, 4th Chemical Company joined the newly formed 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion with a Headquarters Section, a Maintenance Section, three Heavy Decontamination Platoons, one Mechanized Smoke Platoon, one FOX Reconnaissance Platoon and one Biological Integrated Detection Systems Platoon.
