Carbon Cycle 1. Photosynthesis takes sunlight, _______ and _________ to make glucose and oxygen. 2. Cellular respiration takes glucose and oxygen to make ________, water, and ________. 3. Why do living things need both photosynthesis and cellular respiration to get energy? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

4.3 Objectives By the end of today, all SWBAT…  Identify what flows and cycles in the environment.  Illustrate how photosynthesis and cellular respiration participate in the carbon cycle

Agenda  Catalyst  Energy and Matter  Energy Flows  Matter Cycles  Quick Writes  Musical chairs  Exit question

Energy and Matter  Key Point #1: In the environment, energy flows but the matter cycles.  Therefore, you always need more energy for the sun.  Carbon dioxide & water and glucose and oxygen are always being recycled.

Man, Mr. J, This Flowchart Rocks Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Glucose + Oxygen Water + Carbon Dioxide Energy (ATP)

How does energy move??  What has the energy all the energy? Photosynthesis: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + sun  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Solar energy (sun) Chemical energy (glucose)

How does energy move??  What has the energy all the energy? Cellular respiration: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2  6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + ATP Chemical energy (glucose) Chemical energy (ATP)

Energy Flows  Key Point #2: Solar energy  chemical energy in glucose  chemical energy in ATP  Photosynthesis converts solar energy into the chemical energy in glucose (it’s in the bonds).  Cellular respiration converts the chemical energy into the chemical energy in ATP (now the cell can use it).

Man, Mr. J, This Flowchart Rocks Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Glucose + Oxygen Water + Carbon Dioxide Energy (ATP)

Matter Cycles  Key Point #3: Carbon goes from the environment to living things and back to the environment.  The carbon cycle is important since most living things are made of carbon.  We never get new carbon, it’s always being recycled.

 Photosynthesis  Cellular Respiration  Decomposition  Combustion Four steps of the carbon cycle

Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle A

A  Process: Cellular respiration  Definition: plants and animals break down organic carbon to CO 2  Illustration Description: Arrow points from plants/animals to environment

Cellular Respiration CO 2

Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle B

B  Process: Photosynthesis  Definition: plants convert CO 2 into glucose (sugar)  Illustration Description: Arrow points from environment to plants

Photosynthesis + CO 2

Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle C

C  Process: Decomposition  Definition: carbon stored as fossil fuels after things die  Illustration Description: dead animals to underground

Decomposition C C C C C C C

Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle D

D  Process: Combustion  Definition: burning fossil fuels releases CO 2  Illustration Description: from factory to atmosphere

Combustion CO 2 !!!!

What dat mean???  YOU HAVE 20 SECONDS TO QUICKLY WRITE DOWN WHAT THE WORD MEANS!  Cellular Respiration?  Decompostion?  Combustion?  Photosynthesis?

Practice: What step of the cycle?  Involves plants removing CO 2 from the atmosphere?  Involves plants and animals releasing CO 2 into the atmosphere?  Involves a human activity releasing CO 2 into the atmosphere?  Adds and releases CO 2 into the atmosphere at the same time?

QUICK WRITE: 1 min  How does energy flow through the environment?  How does matter cycle through the environment?

Musical Chairs

Start the Homework

Exit Questions Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!  Fix this sentence:  Energy cycles through the environment since we never receive new energy.
