3 Philosophy Lightning Football Coaches’ Commitment Statements As a member of the Eastview Lightning Football Coaching Staff I will be: Mission, Vision, and Value Centered. I understand and will uphold the mission, vision, and values of Eastview High School, of Eastview Athletics, and of the Lightning Football Program. I understand that this will give the program a principle-focused direction. An Educator. I understand that my responsibility is to educate the student/athletes at Eastview High School. I am dedicated to my role as a classroom teacher and this role will remain a priority. I also understand that Lightning Football is a tremendous vehicle through which I can further educate these student/athletes – giving them skills, habits, and attitudes that will serve them throughout life. An Ambassador of the Program. I understand the necessity to consistently communicate the beliefs of the Lightning Football Program in my community, school, teaching department, classroom, weight room, locker room, on the practice field, and in the stadium. I understand this visual display of the ideals of the program will help gain the respect and support of my community. A Positive Role Model for All Student/Athletes. I understand that my behavior will help shape the behaviors of the student/athletes that I coach; therefore, I commit to model and uphold the expectations of Eastview High School and Lightning Football.

4 Philosophy Freshman & Sophomore Purpose & Goals The purpose of the Freshman and Sophomore football programs is to provide a positive introduction to the Eastview Football Program. Each level should instill a sense of pride in Lightning Football and build the foundation for future growth. Develop the football skills of as many players as possible. Start 22 different players and use others on special teams. This will also have an impact on off season development. Fill out mid-season and end of season depth chart and submit to coach Sherwin on appropriate dates. Teach proper lifting technique in the core lifts (Bench, Squat, and Clean). It is an expectation that all team members will lift twice weekly during the season. Workout should mirror those used by the varsity team. At 9 th grade level work to practice together as much as possible. This will aid in skill development as more coaches will be available to work with players. Strive to have all players join the team the following year. The season needs to be a positive and enjoyable experience for all athletes. This means that meaningful opportunities must be given to each player to make them have a sense of ownership. Stress technique in the teaching of skills. The proper blocking and tackling technique and progression must be emphasized on a daily basis. These two skills are the most important factors for future success at the varsity level.

5 Philosophy (Continued) Teach the basic offensive package. It is important that the athletes understand and execute this base system through repetition in practice. This will ensure a solid base as they progress to the next level. Teach the defensive terminology used in the defensive playbook. Schemes may be adjusted as long as they fit within the confines of our terminology. Mirror the daily drills and techniques used by your varsity position group. Teach the basic special teams package used at the varsity level. Develop a kicker for PAT/FG situations. Develop a sense of support between the levels and for the varsity team. Be consistent in the enforcement of team rules and regulations. All correction should be done in a positive manner. Be specific in your correction and explain the “Lightning Way.” Plan and conduct a specific and meaningful football activity for each day of practice. Maintain contact and encourage athletes to participate in other sports and activities throughout the school year. More multi-sport athletes = More success for Eastview Athletics.

7 ERAVE Youth Football League Introducing the ERAVE-YFL The ERAVE-YFL (Eastview, Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eagan Athletic Association Youth Football League) is the new football league formed to serve the middle school athletes of District 196. The four youth athletic associations and District 196 worked together to provide a developmentally appropriate, competitive football league that will expand the current association programs. The ERAVE-YFL will serve to replace the middle school football programs that were eliminated by the district this year because of budget reductions for the 2010-2011 school year. Program Highlights 1. The league will consist of separate 7th grade and 8th grade divisions. 2. Each association will draft players to evenly balance talent among the teams. In other words, associations will not draft a 7th grade “A team,” “B Team” and “C team.” 3. The league will start practicing the beginning of August with games beginning the end of August. There will be two games per week and a league playoff in October. All games will be officiated by certified adult referees. 4. If there are enough teams in the league, teams from the same association will not play each other during the regular season. Athletes must compete for the association that serves their attendance area. 5. All four high school varsity football programs have been involved in developing the league and have committed to providing training for league coaches. 6. The cost for participation will be comparable with rates charged families last year by the associations.
