1 News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids As Matthew said so brilliantly one day returning from morning recess, “I see the Writing Workshop is open.” The children look forward to writing their own personal stories in class each day. Their writing folders will attest to their love of writing and the stamina they are developing as writers. We had our first Writing Celebration on Friday, September 12th, to mark the publishing of our first writing piece. We toasted to great writers and shared our writing with our classmates. Each child selected a piece of writing from his/her writing folder to ‘fix and fancy’ up to send out into the world to be shared. What a remarkable feat this was for our new writers. We honor them. You will be able to see their writing folders in October 16th or 17th for Student Led Conferences. Newsletter 1 September 12, 2008 Writing Workshop News Click to go to the next page

2 News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids Some of the good literature we’ve been reading has been linked to our integrated theme, All About Me. We read about Noisy Nora, a little mouse whose family had three children, like many in our room. We read The Napping House, where a little boy lived with his granny. We counted the feet that are in our house. Using Mem Fox’s book, The Magic Hat, we worked on rhyming words. Miss Jenny in The Big Block of Chocolate taught us about sharing. And of course, we are still on the look out for The Gingerbread Man. Joy Cowley will be the next author we study. She has a website to visit. www.joycowley.com. www.joycowley.com Literacy Highlights Newsletter 1 September 12, 2008 Click to go to the next page

3 News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids Math Happenings In math we’ve been comparing objects using the words longer, shorter or the same. We’ve been sorting objects by color, shape, kind, or size. Playing math games, we’ve measured volume, counted objects, and explored shapes. Over the next two weeks we are going to relate geoboards to shapes, to recognize and say the teen numbers, and to discover lines of symmetry while painting and building monsters.
