SCIENCE FAIR REVIEW

What is the difference between a title and a sub-title?

 Title is creative, short and captures the audience attention.  Subtitle explains the main idea of the experiment and is more like a sentence.

Which is the title and which is the subtitle?  Determining how different paper affects how far paper airplanes fly.  The way to Fly!

 SUBTITLE: Determining how different paper affects how far paper airplanes fly.  TITLE: The way to Fly!

What is the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable?

 Independent variable is things that the scientist changes in the experiment to compare.  Dependent variable is the thing that is measured (rating, score, distance, accuracy, time, etc...)

Which one is the independent variable and a which one is the dependent variable?  4 feet  cardboard, wrapping paper, copy paper

 Dependent variable = 4 feet  Independent variable: cardboard, wrapping paper, copy paper

What is this?  If the type of paper effects how far a paper airplane travels, then the cardstock paper will cause it to fly the furthest because it has the most structure and will keep its shape in flight.

Hypothesis

What are the three words required in a hypothesis?

If, then, becasue

What is missing in this problem?  How far does an airplane fly using different kinds of paper (copy paper-control, cardstock, wrapping paper, cardboard)

The question mark  How far does an airplane fly using different kinds of paper (copy paper-control, cardstock, wrapping paper, cardboard)

Why is this problem asking the wrong thing?  Which paper is the best for getting a paper airplane to fly far?

It asked which one (which paper is best) It is suppose to ask a number question -such as How far… What is the distance that…  Which paper is the best for getting a paper airplane to fly far?

When should research be conducted about the topic?  Before writing a purpose.  After writing a purpose.  Before writing a problem.  After writing a problem.  After conducting the experiment

 After writing a purpose. When should research be conducted about the topic?

Which part of the experiment should be numbered in order?  Materials  Procedure  Results  Conclusion

Which part of the experiment should be numbered in order?  Procedure

What does not go in the observations section of the report.  Date  Time  Location  Temperature  Distractions  Errors  Measurements  What it looks like

What does not go in the observations section of the report.  Measurements

Name at least 5 things that should be discussed in the procedure.

 Collecting materials  When to take photos  When to make observations  When to repeat steps  When to record data  Clean-up steps  Safety Steps  When to calculate average  The details about how to do the specific steps

Write a proper caption for this photo

 (This is a sample)  Photo 1: Testing Location-School Hallway. Paper airplanes were tested by 4 test subjects and were measured in centimeters down the center of a smooth floor hallway. A Photo should be labeled with 3 parts Photo # Title Description

What is wrong with this graph?

Too many bars – Should just be the average?

Given this Graph: Finish the summary of data sentence…This graph shows that…

Given this Graph: Finish the summary of data sentence…This graph shows that the airplanes made out of cardstock flew the farthest (average of 22cm) and the paper airplanes made out of newspaper flew the shortest amount (avg. 6 cm).

What is wrong with this acknowledgements?  I’d like to thank Ms. de Wood. I appreciated all my test subjects: Julie, Jill, Jorge, Jack, Jeremiah, Jose, Jillian, Joseph, Jeremy. I want to recognize my mom and dad too.

Explaining WHY you are acknowledging them.  I’d like to thank Ms. de Wood for all the help teaching me about all the steps required to complete the project. I appreciated all my test subjects: Julie, Jill, Jorge, Jack, Jeremiah, Jose, Jillian, Joseph, Jeremy who helped me collect data during testing the paper airplanes at school. I want to recognize my mom and dad too for purchasing all the materials needed for me to complete the experiment.
