CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS  ENJOY MATHEMATICS  ABILITY TO PERSEVERE  INQUIRING MIND  INDEPENDENT LEARNER  SELF MOTIVATED  DISCIPLINED  LIKELY TO PURSUE MATH, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS, ETC.

What is the transition like for 8 th grade students in Algebra I moving into 9 th grade Geometry Honors?

Geometry Honors Construction Geometry Proofs Right triangle – Pythagorean Theorem Coordinate Geometry Proofs Circle Proofs Area, Surface Area, Volume Lines, Parabolas, Circles Transformations Trigonometry

Coordinate Geometry: Regular: The vertices of triangle ABC are A(-1,2), B(3,8), and C(5,-2). a) Prove that triangle ABC is a right triangle. b) Prove that point M, the midpoint of the hypotenuse, is equidistant from all three vertices of the triangle. Honors: Prove by coordinate geometry that the sum of the squares of the lengths of the sides of a parallelogram is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the diagonals.

 Real and Complex Numbers  Polynomials and Factoring  Solving and Applying Equations  Exponential and Logarithmic Functions  Trigonometry  Probability and Statistics The honors section incorporates enrichment activities which include a number of optional thought-provoking topics and challenging exercises.

An Investigation of Radian Measure

PRECALCULUS HONORS CURRICULUM: Functions and their graphs Polynomial and Rational functions Exponential and Logarithmic functions In-depth study of trigonometry Sequences and Series Polar Coordinate System Vectors – 2D and 3D Conic Sections Systems Introduction to Calculus – limits and continuity

Advanced Placement Courses Computer Science Statistics CalculusAB

ACE Courses AP CalculusAB AP Statistics An ACE course provides students with an opportunity to earn college credit through our partnership with WCC.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS  ENJOY MATHEMATICS  ABILITY TO PERSEVERE  INQUIRING MIND  INDEPENDENT LEARNER  SELF MOTIVATED  DISCIPLINED  LIKELY TO PURSUE MATH, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS, ETC.

Possible AP program Freshman Year: Geometry and AP Computer Science Sophomore Year: Algebra II and AP Computer Science Junior Year: Pre-calculus and AP Statistics Senior Year: AP Calculus / AP Statistics / AP Computer Science

AP COMPUTER SCIENCE Taught in Java Topics Program design Program implementation Program analysis Standard data structures Standard algorithms Computer systems

Prerequisites Interest in Computer Programming Interest in problem solving Enjoys finding alternative solutions Tenacity Desire to learn something different

Not your typical math class A lot of reading, writing and interpreting Prerequisite: Algebra II

AP-STATISTICS Exploring data: observing patterns and departures from patterns Planning a study: deciding what to measure and how to measure it Anticipating patterns: producing models using probability (binomial) and simulations Statistical Inference: confirming data models (Hypothesis Tests and Confidence Intervals)

EXAMPLE January 18, 2013, 7:14 am 42 Comments42 Comments As Obama Begins Second Term, Majority Approve of His Performance By MARJORIE CONNELLY President Obama heads into his second term in office with an overall positive approval rating, but the public remains ambivalent about his handling of the economy.MARJORIE CONNELLYPresident Obama Fifty-one percent of Americans approve of the way Mr. Obama is handling his job, according to a survey by The New York Times/CBS News, with 41 percent disapproving. Mr. Obama’s job approval rating is similar to George W. Bush‘s at the start of his second term, but much lower than the ratings of the previous two presidents who served eight years. (President Bill Clinton‘s approval rate was 60 percent in January 1997, and Ronald Reagan‘s was 62 percent in January 1985.) More than 8 in 10 Democrats approve of his job performance, 8 in 10 Republicans disapprove and independents are evenly divided.George W. BushBill ClintonRonald Reagan The public has not changed its assessment of Mr. Obama’s handling of the economy since the last-minute negotiations with Congress to avert the automatic tax increases and spending cuts that were scheduled to take affect at the end of last year. Almost half, 46 percent, approve of the way the president has been dealing with the economy and 49 percent disapprove.

AP CALCULUS AB Functions, Graphs, and Limits Derivatives Integrals

AP CALCULUS Prerequisite : Precalculus Recommended for :  Students who are highly motivated.  Students with a love of Mathematics  Students who are looking to major in Mathematics, Science, and/or Engineering

Consider…. Computer Science Principles Don’t know what this is? Please ask your guidance counselor or Mrs. Nalbandian.
