Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 PJHA W.H.A.T. BBS Hazard Recognition and Control

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 To Prevent incidents.. All employees and contractors are expected to perform a hazard recognition and control process to identify and eliminate potential hazards prior to beginning any job or task

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Alan Willits Video

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Key Definitions P.J.H.A: Pre Job Hazard Assessment A formal, documented hazard recognition process required for all work covered by a Work Permit W.H.A.T. Risk Assessment process to be used for any task

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 A written PJHA is required prior to beginning any job where a Work Permit is required PJHA or detailed written procedure must identify risks, hazards, and controls taken to execute the work safely Where a Work permit is not required the W.H.A.T. process will be applied

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Prevent Injury! Where hazards exist that cannot immediately be controlled or eliminated, STOP work and notify the appropriate department leadership!

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 The Beauty in Simplicity Pre-Task Hazard Assessment W.H.A.T.?

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 What is the Problem? Many injuries are due to poor hazard recognition Preventable injuries are re-occurring Pre-Job analysis has not been completed properly

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 PJHA Acceptance Barriers: Personnel struggle with forms With forms you analyze the job, not each task.. Seen as a compliance tool only Doesn’t work at home or on the farm

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 W.H.A.T. does an Injury Free Safety Culture look like?

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 W.H.A.T. is the solution W.H.A.T. is a pre-task planning thought process No forms, No paper, No writing Take 10 seconds to think about the acronym for each routine task.. W.H.A.T. will keep me safe today? Non-punitive is a MUST! Commitment over compliance at it’s best!

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Ask W.H.A.T. (4 times) Worst case scenario’s that could occur? Hazards associated with doing this task? Actions I need to do this task safely? Tools I need to complete this task safely?

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 If the job has many complicated tasks, use any piece of plain paper or a formal PJHA Think about the logo W.H.A.T. will keep me safe!

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Other uses? Use W.H.A.T. for: –Environmental troubleshooting –Food safety decision tool –Production equipment troubleshooting

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Environmental W.H.A.T. Worst case environmental scenario’s? Hazards that lead to an environmental issue? Actions needed to prevent/control Hazards? Tools do I need to prevent a release?

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 BBS W.H.A.T. will be added to each facility’s CBI/Observation Sheet –As part of each observation the observer will determine if person observed applied the W.H.A.T. process or used a PJHA and mark as safe or at risk The “percent safe” for this CBI may be tracked and measured for effectiveness

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Smitty

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Right NOW! We must be better at: –Formal PJHA’s & Hazard Recognition –Simplified processes like W.H.A.T. –Self observations –Peer to peer observations To achieve a Zero Injury Culture W.H.A.T. are you willing to do?

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 W.H.A.T. do you think? It’s time to ask the question ? W.H.A.T. will keep me safe..

Collaborate > Create > Succeed 5/20/2015 Play Dirty Jobs Video! Let’s Practice !
