2 America in late 1930s Roosevelt- supported Britain American attitudes began to change- if Britain fell- all of Europe would fall Neutrality Act of 1939—forced America to stay out Cash and carry system for the sale of weapons— ends Neutrality Act and says U.S. can sell weapons to those in war, provided they pay cash and transport them at their own risk Destroyers for Bases Deal (1940)--Roosevelt gives Britain 50 old destroyers in return for the right to build American bases in Newfoundland & Bermuda Some Americans still wanted isolation- America First Committee

3 Roosevelt Wins 3 rd Term Roosevelt runs for a 3 rd term and wins Closer than his second term First president to serve three terms—after his death it became an amendment to constitution People didn’t want to change leaders in the middle of the crisis

4 Why did the Japanese bomb the United States? Late 1930s, Japan attacked Manchuria because they wanted raw materials and to be an imperial power Roosevelt wants to put pressure on the Japanese to back off so he issues an embargo on the sale of airplane fuel & scrap iron to Japan

5 The attack Nov. 26,1941 the Japanese attack fleet set sail for Pearl Harbor They sailed 3,500 miles in radio silence On Dec. 7, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack 2,403 Americans were killed The Japanese failed to destroy all the carriers or the submarine base

8 Congress votes 388 to 1 to declare war Fun fact: The only person to vote against war was the first woman elected to Congress—Jeanette Rankin from Montana— she was a lifelong pacifist.

10 WOMEN JOIN THE FIGHT Army Chief of Staff General George Marshall pushed for the formation of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) Under this program women worked in non-combat roles such as nurses, ambulance drivers, radio operators, and pilots
