1 + Literacy in CTE Looking for a few good teams!

2 + WHY---reading, writing and speaking in my CTE class? Premise: Learning and applying academics in context provides the hook to keep young people in school. Rigorous learning stimulates interests and prepares young adults for careers and postsecondary options.

3 + Workshop outcomes Oct 27—Reading to Learn Teacher teams will learn and practice strategies that help students enhance reading skills in their CTE classes. Take activities back to classroom April 20—Speaking to show Learning Teacher teams share results from Writing activities Teachers brainstorm activities that are a natural fit for presentations January 26—Writing to Learn Teacher teams share results from Reading activities Language Arts teachers share rubrics and CTE teachers learn to identify writing opportunities in classes May TBA share with others about the project June TBA Summer work for teams to polish and publish lessons.

4 + How this helps students Perkins Program of Study CTE teachers reinforce naturally occurring, embedded academic content within their technical instruction Data collected on CTE students on Writing and Reading from state tests Essential Skills for High School Diploma Read and comprehend a variety of text Write clearly and accurately Listen actively, speak clearly and coherently

5 + One Language Arts and two CTE teachers One team from each of the 11 school districts in the PAVTEC consortium Teacher teams

6 + Soooooooo—What do I have to do? Apply Inform your building administrator and get their support Contact your Perkins Point person in your district Find a committed Language Arts teacher Contact me with your team’s players by Oct 1, 2010 (optimally) Obligations Participate in all three sessions 12:30-4PM Implement the activities and report back to group the results Share at an end of year event Spend one designated day in the summer to polish lessons to post (this is paid time)

7 + This is about the students’ learning This is NOT making CTE teachers into Language Arts teachers, but bringing easy, effective, and relevant lessons to CTE students in reading, writing, and speaking for their career choices ------ Using the right tool for the right job!
