Energy From the Sun Most of the energy from the sun travels to Earth in the form of electromagnetic radiation from the SUN. Electromagnetic radiation – a form of energy that can move through the vacuum of space as a wave.

Energy From the Sun Most travels to Earth in the form of visible light and infrared radiation. A small amount arrives as ultraviolet radiation.

Energy From the Sun Infrared – not visible, can be felt as heat. Longer wavelengths than visible light. Visible light– includes all of the colors you see in a rainbow. Ultraviolet– not visible, can cause sunburns. Shorter wavelengths than visible light.

Passes through atmosphere and is ________ by land and water. ___________ by clouds back to atmosphere. ___________ by the surface back to atmosphere. ___________ by the atmosphere. Some absorbed energy is radiated back to the _________. Energy in the Troposphere Some sunlight is absorbed or reflected by the atmosphere. The rest passes through to the surface. http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=D_Qmue54W14

Scattering The reflection of light in all directions.

Why does the sky appear blue? Gas molecules in the atmosphere scatter blue wavelengths, red and orange wavelengths are absorbed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG-ibVdYmtI

Energy at Earth’s Surface Energy that is absorbed by the land and the water is changed into heat.

- Energy in Earth’s Atmosphere Energy at Earth’s Surface When Earth’s surface is heated, it radiates most of the energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation. Much of this energy is held by the atmosphere, warming it.

How Earth’s Atmosphere Gets Energy The _____ gives off ____________. Energy travels to Earth as _____________________________ (visible light, infrared radiation, and ultraviolet light). Some of the sun’s energy is ___________ back into space by clouds or ____________ by the atmosphere. The remaining energy is absorbed by Earth’s _____________, which ______________ the surface of the Earth. Much of the energy absorbed by the surface is then ___________ back into the _________________.

Greenhouse Effect The process by which heat is trapped in the atmosphere by gases that form a “blanket” around the earth.

Greenhouse Effect

Tuesday, May 19, 2015 Complete the “Sun’s Energy in the Troposphere” homework.

19 Types of electromagnetic waves that travel from the sun. Examples of what sunlight does once it enters the atmosphere Example of what energy goes at Earth’s surface.
