3 Warm Up Questions  What do you wear when you go to school?  What do you wear when you hang out?  What do you wear on special occasions?  What do you wear to work?  In what situations do you find dress codes?  In what situations would you discuss someone ’ s clothing or appearance?

4 Culture Note United States (dress code) 1. Safe clothing that is not too revealing or offensive United Kingdom (uniform) 1. From 16 to 18, students are required to follow a dress code or wear a uniform, depending on the school. A typical uniform include a blazer, white shirt, pants or a skirt, a v-neck sweater, a black shoes

5 Cultural Note (2)  Suppose that an American student wears jeans with holes to a school in the US. How might the student ’ s teacher or the other American students view the student? 1. Description : What we see or hear 2. Interpretation : What we think about what we see or hear 3. Evaluation : Whether we think something is good or bad

6 Reflection  What purpose do dress codes play in society?  You have probably seen someone dressed inappropriately for a situation. How did you feel and what did you do?  Describe an experience where you have felt uncomfortable/self-conscious because of the way you were dressed.
