However, what prevented this was the outbreak of war with Austria. Almost everything that happened from this point onwards can be linked to war with Austria. The war directly led to the fall of the monarchy, civil war and the terror.

She hoped France would be defeated and Louis would recover his old powers. There were also rumours that the country’s foreign policy was being run by an ‘Austrian committee’ headed by Marie Antoinette and that secret agents were being sent to the emigres and Vienna to plot counter-revolution.

They sat with the Jacobins in the Assembly. However, Robespierre and Brissot did not get along, due their disagreement over whether or not to go to war. 3. Why were foreign powers confident of victory in any war against France?
