Update Vocabulary Section Book Club: when a group of people meet together to read and discuss what they think about the same book.

What is the PURPOSE of a book club? When we have conversations about a book with friends, they can help us: -Get more excited about reading a book -Understand parts we didn’t understand -Show us a different point of view/ opinion about the book that we didn’t think of

AGENDA  Today we are going to be thinking about what a good and bad book club looks, sounds, and feels like.  We are going to be discussing this in groups and charting our ideas on posters.

Carousel Activity  A Carousel is like a Merry-Go- Around.  So a Carousel Activity is when students go around to different stations and switch stations when Ms. Samadi says, “Switch!”

Directions for Carousel Activity  You will work in groups of 3-4 students.  When you meet with your group, vote on jobs. You will need a: 1)Scribe- Someone who will write for the group 2)Speaker- Someone who will present their poster to the class. 3)Time Keeper- Someone who will remind the group how much time is left and will make sure that everything gets done. 4)Facilitator- Someone who makes sure everyone is doing their job and staying on task. They should see Ms. Samadi immediately if someone is not cooperating.

Directions (continued…)  We will walk across the hallway to the 6 th grade Open Area.  There will be six stations set up. Each station has a poster with a question on it and ONE marker.  You will work as a group to answer the question on the poster.  You will only get 4 minutes at each poster.  The Time Keeper should keep their eye on the time and make sure the group answers the question.  The Scribe is the only one who writes down all of the group’s ideas. It is their job to hold onto the marker when they switch to a new station.

Directions (continued..)  After your 4 minutes are up at the poster, Ms. Samadi will say, “SWITCH!”  You can only go to the next poster when Ms. Samadi says, “Switch!” DO NOT move ahead if you are done. You need to stay with your group at the same poster until it is time to move.  The Scribe should remember to bring the group’s marker with them. Each group will have a different color marker so we will know who wrote what on each poster.  After your group visits all six posters, you will be presenting that poster and what everyone wrote on it to the class.  The Speaker must read the poster to the class loudly and clearly.
